Romeo Doubs-Packers practice drama takes wild suspension twist

Romeo Doubs’ absence from the Packers will continue into the weekend.

On Saturday, the general manager Brian Gutekunst announced that the wide receiver will be suspended from Sunday’s game against the Rams after his actions “negatively impacted the team” this week.

Doubs skipped both Thursday and Friday practices in Green Bay because he was “upset with his opportunities in the passing game,” according to a Friday night report from Bill Huber, who covers the Packers under the Sports Illustrated domain.

“Unfortunately, we had to make the difficult decision to suspend Romeo for this week’s game,” Gutekunst’s statement reads. “His decisions and actions during the week negatively impacted the team and required us to take this action. While we are certainly disappointed, we are confident that we will be able to move forward in a positive manner. Romeo is a valuable member of our team and we look forward to welcoming him back next week.”

Doubs was previously designated as doubtful with a personal issue.

The Packers were reportedly “worried about Doubs’ well being” after skipping out on Thursday and team representatives were subsequently sent to check in on him at his home.

The fourth-round pick to Green Bay in 2022 was expected to take the place of wide receiver Christian Watson this week, as Watson is likely to miss Sunday’s game with an ankle injury.

However, longtime Packers observer Aaron Nagler speculated Doubs’ mood might have come from finding out the week’s game plan, which was solidified in practice on Wednesday.

Doubs’ situation with the Packers brings back memories of the team’s situation with Jaire Alexander last year, in which they suspended the cornerback after he claimed himself to be a team captain during a pregame coin toss in a game against the Panthers.

It nearly resulted in Carolina getting the ball first in each half.

Things have been since resolved and Alexander tallied a pick-six against the Titans this season.

Doubs ranks third in the Packers’ wide receiver room with 20 targets so far, which is just two less than go-to pass-catchers Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks.

This season he has 12 receptions for 169 yards.

Last season the fourth-year receiver had 59 receptions for 674 yards and eight touchdowns across 16 starts.
