Actor John Amos’ cause of death has been revealed.
The star died of congestive heart failure, according to his death certificate, which was obtained by TMZ.
The certificate — issued by LA County — also stated that the “Good Times” actor died at 5:18 PM at Inglewood Hospital in Inglewood, Calif. on Aug. 21.
He was 84.
Outside of his heart failure, no additional medical conditions were listed and an autopsy was not performed.
Amos was cremated on Aug. 30, only 9 died after he passed, per the document. Amos’ son, Kelly Christopher Amos, aka “K.C.,” informed LA County officials about the star’s passing. Per TMZ, the death certificate indicates KC was given his father’s ashes after he was cremated.
K.C., 53, broke the news of his father’s death in a statement issued Tuesday. K.C. said that the “Roots” star died of natural causes.
“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” K.C. shared. “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold … and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father.”
“He lived a good life,” K.C. added. “His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”
“He was my dad, my best friend, and my hero. Thank you for your prayers and support at this time.”
Shortly after K.C.’s announcement, Amos’ daughter Shannon, 58, shared that she only found out about her father’s death via media reports on Tuesday — over a month after the actor passed.
“I am without words,” Shannon said in an Instagram post showing her and her father in a video.
“Our family has received the heartbreaking news that my Dad, John Allen Amos, Jr., transitioned on August 21st,” she continued. “We are devastated and left with many questions about how this happened 45 days ago, learning about it through the media like so many of you.”
“This should be a time of honoring and celebrating his life, yet we are struggling to navigate the wave of emotions and uncertainties surrounding his passing. Still, there is some semblance of peace in knowing my father is finally free.
She added, “My family and I deeply appreciate the outpouring of love, calls, and texts. Please continue to hold our family in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you.”
Shannon and Amos’ relationship was complicated, to say the least.
She accused an unnamed “caregiver” of committing “elder abuse” against her father in June of 2023.
“The cruelty inflicted upon my dad leaves me questioning what kind of human could commit such acts,” she claimed in a since-deleted GoFundMe page.
Amos in turn accused Shannon of elder abuse one month later, which she denied through a representative.
“She would be the primary suspect — if you would,” Amos said in a video filmed from a hospital bed which K.C. posted on Instagram. “I don’t know if that’s the right term to use or not. But she’s the one that I would attribute my elderly abuse to. It’s definitely a case of elderly abuse.”
Amos went on to say he had “an acrimonious relationship” with his daughter while speaking with People last December.
“Right now, it is somewhat acrimonious, but never mind what you might read or hear about in the paper or on this medium or that medium platform,” he told the outlet. “Suffice it to say we are still family, and we love each other, and that’s the bottom line.”
“It is his sibling, that is my daughter, my first child,” he went on. “I love her. K.C. loves his sister. We just have, I guess, what might be best described in the tabloids is an acrimonious relationship, but everything heals in time, and the love is still there.”
He added, “all families go through trials and tribulations of some sort.”
