Two more suspects arrested for pair of city gangland shootings

City police have arrested two more men they say are linked to a pair of shootings last year they describe as gang-related that left one person seriously injured.

Though one man was arrested nearly a year ago for the crimes, police said the reckless violence of the acts prompted them to seek more suspects.

Their investigation started after they received reports of people in two vehicles headed westbound on Glenmore Tr. near 37 St. S.W. trading gunshots on the afternoon of Sept. 30, 2023.

No injuries were reported from the incident and the participants fled the scene before police arrived.

Four nearby homes were struck by stray bullets fired by suspects who fled the scene.

Both shootings had targeted the same victim and were believed to be connected to organized crime conflict in Calgary,” police said in a press release.

Police say they tracked two suspects to a strip mall in the 5700 block of Falsbridge Dr. N.E. on Oct. 18 and due to the threat they posed, deployed their tactical team to make the arrests.

In an exchange of gun fire, a police officer was injured and a suspect killed, while another man was injured and detained at the scene.

Thanh Nguyen, 25, of Calgary, was charged with attempted murder, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and multiple firearms-related offences.

But police said that wasn’t the end of their investigation into the Sept. 30 shootings.

Due to the level of violence displayed, multiple investigative strategies were used, and a significant number of resources were dedicated to this investigation,” they said.

As a result, two Calgary men have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, offences linked to both the Glenmore Tr. and Seton shootings.

Masood Mohammad, 30, is also charged with attempted murder while Harliv Singh Cheema, 20, is additionally charged with accessory after the fact to an indictable offence.

Both are schedule to appear in court again on Oct. 7.

“Our job is to hold everyone responsible for violence in Calgary accountable, and our efforts do not stop at the individual who pulls the trigger,” says Acting Insp. Roland Stewart of the Organized Crime and Offender Management Section.
