Quebec Liberal MNA Marwah Rizqy will leave politics in 2026

Rizqy was considered a potential candidate for leadership of the Quebec Liberals, but says her decision is “final and without appeal.”

Quebec Liberal MNA for the riding of St-Laurent Marwah Rizqy, once perceived as a serious contender for the leadership of her party, announced on Tuesday she will leave politics after completing her current term in 2026. Rizqy cited family reasons, saying she wishes to “fully live (her) role as a mother.”

In a message posted Tuesday morning on her X account on social media, Rizqy said her role as an MNA while raising two young sons was becoming increasingly difficult, especially since her husband, Gregory Kelley, is also a Liberal MNA.

“I want to fully live my role as a mother. I want to be in the same city as my sons and tuck them into bed every night,” she wrote, adding her decision is “final and without appeal.”

Rizqy said she will devote herself “100 per cent” to the remainder of her term, but acknowledged that leaving her children for the week as she regularly leaves Montreal to sit in the legislature in Quebec City had become “too big a sacrifice.”

Marwah Rizqy was first elected to the National Assembly in 2018 and won a second term in 2022.

While she was perceived a potential leadership candidate for her party, she also citied family reasons to remove herself from the running.
