One person seriously injured after collision in Bécancour

The driver believed to be at fault, a male in his 30s, suffered life-threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle, a man in his 60s, suffered less serious injuries.

One person was seriously injured in a collision collision Saturday evening on Highway 55 near Bécancour in the province’s Centre-du-Québec region.

Emergency services were called at about 7:30 p.m. about a collision between two vehicles, according to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

According to initial findings, the driver believed to be at fault in the crash was trying to overtake a second vehicle when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with a vehicle heading in the opposite direction.

The driver believed to be at fault, a male in his 30s, suffered life-threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle, a man in his 60s, suffered less serious injuries and his life is not believed to be in danger, police said.

The jaws of life were required to extract one of the two drivers from his car.

A police officer specializing in crash reconstruction was expected at the scene to shed light on the circumstances of the crash.

Blood samples could be taken from the driver believed to be at fault for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, police said, and he could be charged with dangerous driving.

The highway was closed at Bécancour and a detour set up.
