To all you witches out there – we might just have your next supernatural, campy and sexy binge-watch.
So get your brooms, cast a spell, and join us on a magical ride that some fans have even compared to 90s TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Need we say more?
Today, Agatha All Along – a spin-off to the 2021 Marvel show WandaVision – launched on Disney Plus, starring Kathryn Hahn as the villainous witch Agatha Harkness who forms a coven in the hopes of restoring her powers.
The cast also features the powerhouse actors Aubrey Plaza, Patti LuPone and Joe Locke, and right from the get-go, it’s clear that this series is not only epic in scale, but also a whole lot of kooky fun.
Think Hocus Pocus mixed with Charmed, with a dash of horror for good measure.
After watching the first two episodes, several people were raving about how much it reminded them of Buffy, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as the titular vampire slayer.
The introduction of Aubrey as Rio – an antagonistic sorcerer who has some unfinished business with Agatha – also drew parallels to Dark Willow, the evil alter-ego of Buffy’s Willow, played by Alyson Hannigan.
‘This was so Dark Willow coded,’ one X user called @greninjass said, after a scene that saw Rio pin Agatha to a wall with a knife, and then lick blood off her hand.
‘Close enough – welcome back Buffy and Faith,’ @michaelryanp added, comparing the two Buffy characters to Agatha and Rio.
Another fan called @artdirectionk remarked that they didn’t realise how much they missed Dark Willow until they watched Agatha All Along.
‘The cast is immensely talented and fun to watch, and I personally think the campy, quippy dialogue calls back to shows like Buffy,’ @EmmJayGames also shared.
Several fans also couldn’t take the ‘raw sexual tension’ between Agatha and Rio, when the characters’ reunion takes place in episode one.
‘Aubrey Plaza brings plenty of pizza and sexual tension to episode one of #AgathaAllAlong,’ @SBRadachi commented.
Meanwhile, @stohibs described Agatha and Rio’s fight sequence as ‘the best sex scene’, that they’d ever watched.
That’s certainly one way to make a bang in episode one!
During an interview ahead of Agatha All Along’s launch, Aubrey gave the best answer when asked for her views on the series being called the ‘gayest’ Marvel Cinematic Universe project so far.
‘It better be, cause that’s what I signed up for,’ she told Variety.
In addition to Agatha and Rio’s palpable chemistry, another big talking point on the show has been the true identity of Joe’s character, who is currently known simply as Teen.
When asked by Metro.co.uk if he could share how viewers will feel when they find out the truth, he answered coyly: ‘Well, I think – I hope – they’ll be excited, and it’ll be a cool, cool mystery to be solved.’
He then added light-heartedly: ‘If I say less, then the less I’m likely to say anything I’m not allowed to say!’
