Door falls off airplane, forcing emergency landing in South Carolina

A South Carolina flight made an emergency landing shortly after takeoff Tuesday — because a door fell off the small plane.

The single-engine aircraft, a Diamond DA40, declared an emergency after the door plummeted into the yard of a vacant home, minutes after it took off from Myrtle Beach International Airport at 2:53 p.m., WMBF-TV reported.

A pilot and passenger were on board, but there were no injuries, the report said.

The ill-fated plane — whose flight number matched one belonging to flight school LIFT Academy — was able to turn around and land back at the airport at 3:01 p.m.

Wendy Hodges was leaving her home when someone told her a part of a plane had fallen in the area, the local report said. She then located the door in the yard of a home next to hers.

Another emergency landing also took place Tuesday in New England.

The Cape Air Cessna 402C with a landing gear issue made a dramatic return to Boston’s Logan Airport — landing with just one wheel in an incredible caught-on-video scene.

The plane’s pilot and two passengers — including a Cape Air trainee — were not hurt.
