Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau memorial removed from Saddledome

The hockey team has listed dedicated destinations and donation plans for specific items in what the Flames call an “enduring tribute strategy” to assure the legacy of the memorial lives on for years.

Signs, messages and chalk have been photographed, with photos being provided to the Gaudreau family in a digital memory book.

Any hockey sticks left behind will be turned into benches for use in fundraising efforts for local charities. Plaques on the benches will read “In memory of Johnny & Matthew Gaudreau.”

Skittles and other food items deemed no longer edible will be counted, and a financial donation in the total will directed to the Calgary Food Bank. Sports drinks will be emptied and donated to KidSport Calgary recycling program.

Staff work to dismantle the memorial to former Calgary Flame Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew in front of the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary on Monday, September 16, 2024. The memorial was documented digitally for an album to be presented to the Gaudreau family, and while food items cannot be donated due to health and safety regulations, a commensurate donation will be made to the Calgary Food Bank.Brent Calver/Postmedia

Toys made of cloth and cotton such as Teddy Bears will be donated to Parachutes for Pets, a charity supported by Mikael Backlund and Mackenzie Weegar, and used for for the Lily and Dexter’ Legacy program which ensures children in care can stay with their pets by providing essential support such as leashes, collars, vet care, vaccines, and licensing. Jerseys will be used to make blankets that will be donated to various charities.

Organics, such as flowers, will be composted and soil will be placed in parks around Calgary.

All remaining items will be reviewed after sorting is complete.
