Olympics fans are absolutely fuming after the BBC abruptly stopped its coverage of the Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz Olympics final.
The tennis superstars faced off today in yet another showdown, after going up against each other at this year’s Wimbledon Championships.
Not only did their men’s singles final today mark a brilliant bout between two of the world’s best tennis players, but also resulted in Djokovic finally clinching the Olympic gold medal that he’d sought for years.
The BBC showed the beginning of their clash, with the Serbian winning the first set before the Spaniard gave his opponent a run for his money yet again in the second set, before the former finally reigned supreme.
However, those watching on BBC One and on BBC iPlayer were left sorely disappointed when the live coverage stopped.
‘One of the all time great sets and the BBC now isn’t broadcasting the second between Alcaraz and Djokovic. I know there’s loads going on but it’s just not good enough when it’s such a historic final,’ an infuriated Alex wrote on X.
‘A classic set of tennis between Djokovic and Alcaraz for the gold medal and BBC ends footage of it. Unbelievable. Thanks @BBC,’ a disappointed Lee added.
Ads asked if the BBC were ‘having a laugh’ after they tuned in for the first set of the match.
‘Absolutely ridiculous coverage, jumping from one channel to another all the time. So annoyed,’ they stated.
Meanwhile, an X user called @remainian pointed out that the match ‘may be the highlight of the entire Games’, as Djokovic and Alcaraz are both ‘playing peak tennis in the Olympic Final’.
‘How on earth do you not justify broadcasting,’ they questioned.
@DyingBreed_A revealed how hard they’d been trying to stay on top of the game, tweeting: ‘If you knew the stress I’ve gone through trying to stream the Djokovic v Alcaraz game.. BBC One you’ve made an enemy out of me for life.’
However, tennis fan Stuart managed to find a solution – although it wouldn’t have been accessible for everyone.
‘Djokovic v Alcaraz really highlighting the BBC’s Olympic rights limitations here. After showing the best first set of tennis this year, the only option to continue following the action is the website live text 😬 Thankfully there is a reliable stream of the match on Discovery+,’ Stuart wrote.
While this is useful information for anyone who’s already signed up to Discovery Plus, it would mean that viewers would have to fork out to pay for a subscription if they wanted to continue to watch the final live.
