Suspect, 59, arrested in connection with string of downtown Montreal fires

Alleged to have set several garbage cans and a car ablaze this week.

A 59-year-old man has been arrested in connection with five fires set in the Ville-Marie borough between July 29 and Aug. 1, Montreal police announced Friday.

The suspect allegedly set garbage cans and a car on fire. The incidents do not appear to be linked to organized crime, according to police.

The man was arrested while allegedly setting a fire in a garbage can behind a building on Crescent St. just after 3:30 a.m. Thursday and appeared at the Montreal courthouse later that day on five counts of arson and property damage.
