An Olympics commentator wanted to look away after a ‘tragic’ moment for Brazil football legend Marta.

Paris 2024 is 38-year-old Marta’s sixth and final Olympics as she is set to retire from football later this year.

Marta has been a mainstay in the Brazil women’s team for over two decades, with the forward amassing a staggering 200 caps since making her debut in 2002 and scoring an impressive 119 goals.

She is hoping to get her hands on Olympic gold in Paris having helped Brazil claim silver at the 2004 and 2008 Games.

But Marta’s sixth Olympic appearance could end in heartbreak as she was sent off in her team’s Group C clash against Spain at the Stade Matmut-Atlantique in Bordeaux.

Challenging for a high ball on the edge of the Brazil box, Marta appeared to slightly slip and ended up clattering into a Spanish player with a ‘really rash’ high foot.

The referee immediately showed Marta a red card, leaving the Brazilian distraught and having to be consoled by her international team-mates.

Marta was still in tears as she left the pitch and the Eurosport commentator admitted it was ‘hard to watch’ a legend of the women’s game so crestfallen.

‘That was rash from Marta, really rash,’ the commentator said after watching a replay of the challenge. ‘Wow. Marta’s last Olympics.

‘This is tragic. Her last Olympics. Her sixth and final Olympics and this is how she’s going to go out. She looks devastated.

‘It was a really high foot, I’m not sure if she slipped in the build-up. She is inconsolable. This is hard to watch.’
