Former Saskatchewan cabinet minister Lyle Stewart dead at 73

Premier Scott Moe announced Tuesday that flags at the provincial legislature will fly at half mast.

A former Saskatchewan Party MLA with over two decades of service in the provincial legislature has died.

Lyle Stewart, a 23-year veteran of provincial politics, died of cancer at the age of 73, according to a social media post Tuesday by Premier Scott Moe.

“His quiet strength and dedication to the people he served were an example to all of us who served with him,” Moe wrote.

Stewart served as MLA for Thunder Creek and Lumsden Morse. He first won election to the legislature in 1999, winning all his subsequent campaigns until retiring from politics last year.

The Saskatchewan Party made Stewart interim leader in 2004, between the departure of Elwin Hermanson and the election of Brad Wall.

A well-respected MLA throughout his tenure in the legislature, Stewart was known for his toughness, including a 2009 incident in which he fended off a would-be carjacker. Stewart would go on to describe the incident as “nothing serious at all” despite sustaining injuries to his hand and wrist.

“Lyle was a good friend and I will miss him a lot,” Moe added in the social media tribute announcing Stewart’s death.

Moe went on to announce that the legislature flags would fly at half mast in Stewart’s honour.
