Garrett Crochet isn’t traded in White Sox deadline stunner

Garrett Crochet is staying in Chicago.

After weeks of rumors, the White Sox ace wasn’t dealt ahead of Tuesday’s MLB trade deadline.

Crochet has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season, posting a 3.23 ERA over 114 ⅓ innings with an American League-best 160 strikeouts.

Under team control for 2 ½ more years, Crochet was widely considered one of the most valuable players on the market.

But with the innings stacking up, there were questions about how much longer Crochet could – and would – remain a starter after never having logged more than 54 ⅓ innings in a big league season before 2024.

Crochet’s trade market was complicated even further last week when The Post’s Jon Heyman reported that the southpaw “would need [an] extension to pitch in October” if he’s traded from the White Sox.

Heyman added that Crochet wouldn’t move to the bullpen or take a break from pitching on a new team.

As recently as Sunday, Heyman reported that Crochet and teammate Luis Robert, who is also staying with the White Sox after being the subject or trade rumors, had a “decent to excellent chance” to be moved ahead of the deadline.

White Sox brass was reportedly unhappy with Crochet’s load management demands.

Chicago general manager Chris Getz said Monday he was caught off guard by Crochet’s demands being made known by his side.

“The communication had been very strong between Garrett and I and his agency,” Getz said. “I was a little surprised and taken aback by how they went about it, considering I had a conversation with his agent the night before. That’s not exactly the tactic I would have taken, being a former player.”

Getz added that Crochet’s team’s message was “a bit hurtful, quite honestly.”

The White Sox did make a number of other moves ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, including trading Eloy Jimenez to the Orioles and Erick Fedde and Tommy Pham to the Cardinals in a three-team deal with the Dodgers.
