Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez refused to film Disney crossover scenes together — thanks to mutual ex Nick Jonas

Even the Disney Channel child stars couldn’t escape high school drama.

Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez “only got along intermittently,” as they were once at odds over Nick Jonas, according to “Wizards of Waverly Place” alum Jennifer Stone.

Stone, 31, discussed the situation on Monday’s episode of her and David DeLuise’s rewatch podcast “Wizards of Waverly Pod.” She claimed the tension between the two actresses over Jonas, 31, was why they did not share scenes in the show’s 2009 crossover episode “Wizards on Deck With Hannah Montana.”

The three-part special brought together characters from “Wizards of Waverly Place,” “Hannah Montana” and “The Suite Life on Deck” for an adventure on board the SS Tipton. Both stars appeared in the episode but didn’t interact once with one another.

“It was, like, high school. Like, they both dated Nick. I think Miley dated him first and then Selena dated him, and then it was just messy high school nonsense,” Stone recalled.

“They’re fine now. They’re all good now,” she clarified. “But, yeah, it was high school BS.”

Cyrus, 31, and Jonas reportedly dated between 2006 and 2007. Cyrus confirmed their relationship in a 2008 interview with Seventeen magazine, and Jonas later referred to Cyrus as his “first crush” in 2015.

Cyrus’ 2008 song “7 Things” was inspired by their breakup, which Jonas confirmed a decade later.

The youngest Jonas brother moved on with Gomez, 32, in 2008, but they called it quits by the time “Wizards on Deck With Hannah Montana” filmed. They briefly rekindled their romance in 2010 before parting ways for good. Despite their rocky relationship, the pair remained friendly, with Gomez describing their relationship as “like puppy love” in 2015.

In recent years, both Cyrus and Gomez have shown they are on good terms.

“We never feuded,” Gomez said of Cyrus in a 2016 W magazine interview. “We both liked the same guy when we were 16.”

In 2018, Cyrus defended Gomez after Dolce & Gabbana designer Stefano Gabbana made a derogatory comment, appearing to call Gomez “ugly” in a comment on social media.

The two stars also opened up about mental health on Cyrus’ Instagram show “Bright Minded” in 2020, where the “Only Murders in the Building” star candidly revealed her bipolar diagnosis.

Last year, they celebrated that they were each releasing new songs on the same day, and Gomez went on to praise Cyrus’s new music on social media.

Regarding their current love lives, Gomez has been dating music producer Benny Blanco since 2023, while Cyrus has been in a relationship with drummer Maxx Morando since 2021.

Jonas tied the knot with Priyanka Chopra in 2018 and the two have a 2-year-old daughter named Malti.
