The epicentre was recorded close to Valleyfield.
A small earthquake occurred near Valleyfield, about 40 kilometres southwest of Montreal, Monday morning.
“Felt in Montreal. There are no reports of damage, and none would be expected,” Earthquakes Canada reported.
The earthquake, measuring magnitude 3.2, struck at 8:12 a.m. It was recorded 12.6 kilometres underground.
An earthquake less than 3.5 is generally not felt, Earthquakes Canada said.
There are more than 4,000 earthquakes a year in Canada on average, or 11 a day, according to Earthquakes Canada. Of those, only about 50 are felt.
The largest earthquake recorded in this region dates back to 1732 and measured magnitude 5.8. In 2010, a 5.0-magnitude quake struck the area.
