Several weekend collisions on Alberta highways resulted in multiple fatalities

RCMP reported several vehicle collisions on central and southern Alberta highways over the weekend, three of which were fatal.

One of the incidents resulted in an impaired driving arrest, while the others remain under investigation.

Strathmore

RCMP responded to calls at approximately 10 a.m. on Friday after receiving reports of a serious motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 564.

RCMP said in a statement that it appears the semi-truck, which had been travelling south on Highway 9, collided with the SUV after it rolled from the stop sign while executing a northbound turn.

The male driver of the semi, who is 68 years old, escaped from the truck before it caught fire, police said. He sustained minor injuries and was assessed by EMS at the scene.

The four SUV occupants were found dead at the scene. They were a 62-year-old woman from Calgary, a 38-year-old man from Calgary, and an adult male and female in their early 60s from the Philippines.

Rocky View County

On Sunday, at approximately 1:15 a.m., Cochrane RCMP responded to a report of a serious motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 22 and Township 281 in Rocky View County.

Emergency crews arrived to find a truck hauling a trailer and a small SUV had collided with each other travelling the same direction. Police believe both vehicles were travelling north on Highway 22 at the time of the incident.

Investigation revealed that the collision was caused by the truck over correcting while returning to the road from the shoulder, first travelling into the southbound lane and then back into the northbound lane. The SUV collided with the trailer being pulled, according to an RCMP news release.

The truck struck the guard rail and went into the ditch. The driver of the truck, a 19-year-old male, was pronounced deceased on scene.

The occupants of the SUV, three 26-year-olds from Calgary, two males and a female, were all treated for non-life threating injuries and taken to a nearby hospital.

Ponoka

On Sunday at 1:45 a.m., RCMP received a report of a serious motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 2A and 57 Avenue in Ponoka.

Emergency crews arrived to find a pedestrian laying near the south bound lane of the road. Police say the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle travelling from the north bound lane.

RCMP say the collision between the vehicle and pedestrian occurred when the vehicle over corrected, coming in contact with the pedestrian. The adult pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene.

The lone occupant and driver of the vehicle was arrested for impaired operation.

Vulcan County

On Sunday, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Vulcan RCMP and High River Traffic Services responded to a report call of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 23, at the intersection with Highway 24 in Vulcan County.

Police say a south bound pickup truck collided with an east bound SUV in the middle of the intersection. The SUV had left the east bound stop sign to cross Highway 24 when the collision took place.

The lone occupant of the truck was treated for minor non-life threatening injuries. The three occupants of the SUV were transported to a Calgary-area hospital. One of the SUV occupants was flown by STARS Air Ambulance.
