Sports Briefs: A wrap for the Rattlers

Weekend results from the Saskatchewan Rattlers, Saskatoon Berries and Saskatchewan athletes at the Olympic Games

The Saskatchewan Rattlers’ 2024 Canadian Elite Basketball League season came to an end on Friday, with a loss to the host Montreal Alliance.

Entering the game, the Rattlers knew they wouldn’t be advancing to the playoffs, with their 88-82 loss to the Ottawa Blackjacks Thursday night eliminating them from contention.

Saskatchewan was outscored in the first quarter of Friday’s game and found themselves trailing 20-12 at the first break. They closed the gap by four points in the second quarter and trailed by five at the conclusion of the third.

However, Montreal put up a dominant fourth quarter, holding the Rattlers to only ten points while scoring 22 of their own to claim the 89-72 victory.

Saskatchewan’s Emmanuel Bandoumel and Montreal’s Guillame Payan-Boucard both picked up a game-high 21 points.

They end the season with a 6-14 record.

Berries trade wins with Dawgs

The Saskatoon Berries hosted the Okotoks Dawgs for a pair of Western Canadian Baseball League games this weekend.

In Saturday’s meeting, Okotoks got off to a strong start, picking up four runs in the first inning.

Both teams were then kept away from home plate after that until the Berries scored two in the sixth inning, thanks to a two-run home run by Bailyn Sorenson.

However, the Berries weren’t able to get back to home plate in the remaining innings, while the Dawgs added another run in the eighth to win 5-2.

But when the two teams met again on Sunday afternoon, the Berries staged a comeback and reversed the previous game’s score, handing the Dawgs a 2-5 defeat.

Saskatchewan athletes in action at Olympics

In his Olympic debut, Saskatoon swimmer Blake Tierney advanced to the men’s 100-metre backstroke semifinals in Paris, finishing fifth in his heat with a time of 53.89 on Sunday morning.

Tierney took part in the semifinals later that day, finishing 16th overall with a time of 53.71. Only the top eight times overall advanced to the final.

Later in the Games, Tierney will also compete in the men’s 200-metre backstroke.

Also making her Olympic debut this weekend was women’s rugby sevens player Carissa Norsten of Waldheim.

The red-and-white will face China on Monday morning in their final pool game, with playoffs to follow.
