When you’re catching a flight there are a few things that can make or break the experience, one of which is the food you’re served.

Depending on where you’re going it can be a roulette over whether you’ll end up with a tray of beige or something delicious – but with one airline, you’ll only ever get the best.

MoneySuperMarket’s travel insurance team analysed over 270,000 in-flight meal reviews from more than 100 different airlines to find out which had the best and worst offerings.

And according to passengers, Kuwait Airways is the first class foodie choice, with the West Asian carrier scored 8.6 out of 10 – the highest of any in the ranking.

Kuwait Airways’ website says ‘Kuwait Airways’ Culinary Panel this year have taken great care to create this menu for you, calling upon a broad palette of cooking styles from all over the world.

‘Our chefs have used their talent and imagination to design a selection of dishes to suit your taste.’

Meals aboard Kuwait Airways range from curries and stews in economy all the way up to lobster in Royal Class.

Plus, a variety of dietary needs and preferences are catered for, without sacrificing taste. This includes sugar-free meals for diabetics, gluten-free meals, vegetarian and vegan meals, as well as a Hindu non-vegetarian meal which will never contain beef.

Kuwait Airways also came out top for best meal in business class specifically, earning a score of 8.87 for its menus of steak, prawn and salmon dishes, among others.

Reddit user HotMission077 – who shared the baked cod with mashed potatoes and sautéed veg she sampled on a plane journey along with her travelling companion’s chicken biryani – agreed, commenting: ‘Kuwait Airways always serves the best meals’.

Middle East-based airlines featured heavily in the food ranking, with Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad, and Gulf Air all doing well.

Out of the UK and Ireland travel companies, Virgin Atlantic finished top, but still only came 49th overall, while British Airways trailed behind at 55th.

It’s worth noting though, the list only included providers that offered food as standard with the ticket, so budget airlines like EasyJet and Ryanair (where it’s sold separately) weren’t featured.

If they had, MoneySuperMarket claims both of their scores would be a 6 out of 10, slightly higher than Aer Lingus at 5.7.
