Netflix reboot of beloved 00s reality show impresses viewers with ‘dumb’ Ninja Turtles tribute

Wake up babe, it’s 2004 again, or at least it feels that way as Netflix have given us an updated version of Pimp My Ride.

After a quick MOT of the MTV original, Resurrected Rides has pulled up on the streaming platform and indicated to us that vintage reality TV has a place in 2024.

The beloved show was previously hosted by rapper Xzibit from 2004 until 2007 and saw members of the public getting their vehicles transformed at a custom body shop.

The original producers behind the concept have now restarted those engines and updated it a little for modern audiences. (Are the car metaphors breaking you down yet?)

This time Saturday Night Live comedian and actor Chris Redd is at the helm, backed up by a team of mechanics, who oversee the jaw-dropping modifications from start to finish.

‘This show is really dope. We make people cry in a great way and we help people with their lives and we talk some s**t. I think you should watch it. And that’s all I got to say,’ raved Chris to Road and Track.

Executive producer Rick Hurvitz, who produced the original with Ari Shofet, explained to Tudum: ‘We took the spirit and knowledge from the original [series] and reimagined it with a hilarious host, brand-new cast, plus the eye-popping technology and culture of today.’

The first episode kickstarts in an epic fashion with comic-book-loving stunt performer Tavon getting his beat-up van transformed into an enviable motor.

Taking inspiration from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the team made the 1991 Vanagan a comic fan’s dream.

The nostalgic toy provided Chris with an idea

Chris even insisted that it featured a pizza thrower, just like a toy from 1989. The feature meant that the updated vehicle, which had a gorgeous green paint job and projector so Tavon is able to watch movies in a comfy seating area in the back, also had a device that shoots pizzas from the roof. (You can see it in action at 1:15 in the trailer above).

‘It’s real dumb,’ said Chris between laughter.

‘That is useless as s**t. I can’t believe I made you do that.’

The silliness of some design decisions, mixed in with the actually impressive handiwork and heartwarming reactions from the very grateful vehicle owners has captivated viewers, who took to X to express their joy at its return.

‘Resurrected Rides on Netflix which is basically their ‘Pimp My Ride’ is fun bc you can tell they were allowed to do just one unnecessary thing to the car lol,’ noted MrAcosta89.

Tomngo422 is also a fan: ‘The new pimp my ride (resurrected rides) is pretty good. Chris Redding & the cast is pretty solid.’

‘Just discovered #ResurrectedRides on @NetflixUK and got to say, it’s a pretty fun show,’ remarked A_Jay01. While Diana Zimmerman stated her intention to continue binging the show all weekend.

‘Resurrected Rides is the feel-good Pimp My Ride spiritual successor I need. The title sucks though,’ stated 42Kmi.

So if you fancy some low-stakes reality TV with a boisterous edge, then it may be time to park your bottom on the sofa and gear yourselves up for series one.
