‘Deeply moving’ and ‘tearjerking’ documentary with 100% Rotten Tomatoes score is coming to Netflix

Netflix viewers are predicting a documentary they are already tipping for an Oscar will ‘wreck them’ when it’s released in the coming weeks.

follows four daughters preparing to reunite with their incarcerated fathers at a dance as part of a unique programme organised by a Washington DC prison.

The feature documentary was previously released at Sundance Festival where it won the audience award in the documentary competition and the festival favourite award.

After its premiere, it garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews across the board and has a rare perfect score, 100%, on Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator the Tomatometer.

Now, though, Daughters has been given a more widespread released on Netflix and viewers are already psyching themselves up to be emotionally destroyed when it’s released on August 14.

After watching the trailer, @DolceDyamond declared on X: ‘The trailer has me at work in tears. I just KNOW the full doc is gonna have me down bad.’

Echoing their sentiment, @Moonlit_Games exclaimed: ‘oof that’s a touching story!

@LifeIsAFilmFest tipped it for a huge award: ‘It is wonderful! I wouldn’t be surprised if it wins the Oscar next year.’

@s_lester14 also added: ‘This is going to wreck me.’

Among the critics heaping Daughters with praise was Richard Lawson in Vanity Fair, describing the documentary as an ‘alternately shattering and hopeful look at family and the prison system. ‘

In Harpers Bazaar, critic Tomris Laffly warned viewers the documentary will make them ‘ugly-cry’ as it’s a ‘bighearted, deeply empathetic tearjerker.’

‘It’s hard to imagine a sharper critique of our dehumanizing prison system,’ Laffley added.

In his Hollywood Reporter review, Daniel Fienberg said: ‘Reservations aside, I still came away from Daughters emotionally wrung out like a damp washcloth and infuriated at a system of punishment that too often fails everybody.’

Daughters isn’t the only Netflix show to have scored 100% on Rotten Tomatoes this month – with Supacell, Savage Beauty and The Mole proving a hit with reviewers.

Savage Beauty centres on a woman who, in her attempt to avenge a tragic past, embeds herself into a powerful family who run a global beauty empire – and who are also hiding secrets of their own.

Meanwhile, Supacell follows a group of people living in south London who suddenly discover they have super powers, and the man who has to unite them to save the woman he loves.

Finally, The Mole, a reboot of a game show which originally aired on US screens from 2001-2008, sees 12 players take on a string of challenges to add money to a prize pot – except one of their number has been assigned as a ‘mole’, their job being to sabotage their efforts as much as possible.
