There was good news earlier this year for fans of hit 00s sitcom Green Wing, and that good news might be about to become great news.

The Channel 4 series started back in 2004 and ran for two seasons before coming to an end in 2007, and is widely celebrated as one of the greatest British sitcoms of all time.

Green Wing revolves around the lives of the staff at East Hampton Hospital, a fictional medical centre in which unusual and surreal incidents frequently occur.

It starred the likes of Tamsin Greig, Olivia Colman, Steve Mangan, and Mark Heap – the stars of whom continued to rise once the series had concluded.

After returning as a six-part radio show through Amazon’s Audible audiobook and podcast service, Green Wing could be about to jump back onto TV.

Speaking to the Radio Times, the show’s writer and creator Victoria Pile was discussing her new series Piglets when she dropped the almighty news bomb that Green Wing’s team are back around the table.

‘We are debating [a revival],’ she told the magazine, adding: ‘I’m about to email everybody and see how they feel about it. So, yeah, we’re contemplating what we could do.’

The ending of the original series was literally a cliff-hanger, with the characters on the run from the police in a camper van which ends up hanging over a sheer drop.

That ending was in itself a reference to how the first season came to a close, which also cut to black with the characters hanging perilously from a cliff edge after swerving to avoid a sheep in the road.

However, it wasn’t always in the plans to bring back Green Wing on TV, with Victoria saying: ‘Somebody had asked me if I would do another Green Wing, and I said no.’

‘And if I did [bring it back], it would be with Channel 4.’

Earlier this year, a six-part podcast series called Green Wing: Resuscitated featured regular appearances from the original members of the 2004 cast – it was the first new Green Wing material for nearly 20 years.

Despite initial fears that its visual comedy style would suffer in an audio format, user reviews on Audible were glowing, with users scoring it 4.9 out of 5 after more than 1,000 ratings.

The audio series followed the likes of Guy Secretan (Stephen Mangan) who was now a TV sensation-slash-anaesthetist, and Dr ‘Mac’ McCartney (Julian Rhind-Tutt) who works as a surgeon at East Hampton.

Fans on Twitter were ecstatic with how the series turned out, with @PennywisePeter saying: ‘I don’t know who needs to hear this, but Green Wing Resuscitated on Audible is superb, and well worth getting the free trial for. All the original cast, excellent writing, and very very funny.’

Meanwhile @RareButtons said: ‘I have just been informed of the existence of Green Wing Resuscitated. Re-activating my audible account to go listen.’
