What’s the Kamala Harris ‘coconut tree’ meme and why is it going viral?

You think this meme just fell out of a coconut tree?

With Vice President Kamala Harris becoming the new Democratic front-runner after President Biden suddenly dropped out of the race on Sunday, her coconut tree meme has resurfaced and gone viral, with members of her own party getting in on the action.

In the last 24 hours, Democratic governors, senators and PACs have voiced their support for Harris while mentioning coconut trees or adding coconut emojis to their posts.

The meme stems from a random moment in a speech Harris gave in May last year as she was swearing in commissioners for the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics.

During the speech, Harris attempted to explain the need to invest in the next generation of Americans, bringing up something her mother used to tell her regarding how something doesn’t exist without a predecessor.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people, you think you just fell out of a coconut tree?” Harris said midway through her speech.

This is a developing story.
