2024 NFC East season preview: Bet on the Eagles or Cowboys?

On Tuesday, the Giants open training camp to their veterans, and the other three NFC East teams will follow suit Wednesday.

Inside seven weeks from the start of the regular season, oddsmakers expect the Eagles and Cowboys to contend for the division title.

Here is a preview of the division’s four teams, their DraftKings odds to win the NFC East and a best bet.

2024 NFC East season odds, preview

Eagles (+100)

After their first 11 games last year, the Eagles held a 10-1 record.

However, they then went into a tailspin, dropping five of their next six games.

OC Brian Johnson and DC Sean Desai were consequently canned after the team’s embarrassing blowout playoff loss.

Philly snagged dynamic running back Saquon Barkley in free agency to pair with Jalen Hurts. The Eagles also signed DeVante Parker, adding more talent to their receiver room.

On defense, they signed safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and linebackers Devin White and Bryce Huff.

They also drafted cornerbacks Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell. Play in the secondary was a major issue, but the Eagles went all-in to repair the unit.

Cowboys (+150)

Despite stringing together a 12-win season, the Cowboys fell short of expectations, losing in the first round of the playoffs to the Packers.

Except for signing Ezekiel Elliott to fill the gap that Tony Pollard’s loss created, the Cowboys did very little in free agency.

Elliott does not have nearly the same burst he had in his earlier years, which makes the loss of Pollard a substantial one.

Losing Tyron Smith and Tyler Biadasz should also be concerning, considering Prescott’s best play comes when he has time in the pocket.

A weakened O-line could derail the Cowboys’ offensive attack, making them lean too heavily on their defense to make big plays like it did last season.

Commanders (+800)

The Commanders finished last season 4-13 after beginning 2-0.

They ranked 30th in overall defensive rating, per PFF, and their offense was not much better.

Drafting Jayden Daniels with the second overall pick can at least solve the team’s long-standing issue at quarterback.

Washington’s offense can only improve with Daniels under center, and they certainly prioritized filling in the talent gaps around him by adding running back Austin Ekeler, tight end Zach Ertz and center Tyler Biadasz.

On defense, they added Dante Fowler Jr., Bobby Wagner, Johnny Newton, Dorance Armstrong, Frankie Luvu, Clelin Ferrell, Mike Sainristil and Jeremy Chinn — additions that can at least make opposing teams uncomfortable.

Giants (13/1)

Any optimism for the Giants should be cautious. Last season, they lost quarterback Daniel Jones to a torn ACL, but his play up to that point was abysmal, throwing for just two touchdowns in his first six games.

The Giants had to settle for running back Devin Singletary after losing Barkley to the Eagles. Instead of giving Barkley the big deal he sought, the organization prioritized adding to its offensive line, which in recent years has consistently been one of the worst units in the NFL.

The improved O-line and the addition of wide receiver Malik Nabers in the draft will help make Jones’s life easier. Still, the Giants don’t have enough firepower to compete with teams like Dallas or Philadelphia.

NFC East best bet

Even though their line is not quite where we would like it to be, there is still value in betting on the Eagles to win the NFC East.

The Commanders and Giants are still miles away from contending, and the Cowboys took a step back, losing several key offensive linemen and their star running back.

Betting on the NFL?

Additionally, the Eagles addressed all of their major defensive issues, particularly their secondary. The signings of Barkley and Parker will also be huge in furthering this already elite offense.
