Bill and Hillary wasted little time and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris Sunday to become their party’s nominee for president after Joe Biden dropped out of the race.
While lavishing praise on Biden’s accomplishments in office, the Clintons, who were rumored to have been among those resisting private calls for him to step aside, urged the party to unite around Harris.
“We’ve lived through many ups and downs, but nothing has made us more worried for our country than the threat posed by a second Trump term,” they said in a joint statement.
“Now is the time to support Kamala Harris and fight with everything we’ve got to elect her. America’s future depends on it.”
Shortly after his political earthquake announcement, Biden endorsed Harris to take his place as the party standard-bearer.
Democratic mutineers against Biden had splintered over exactly how the process to replace him should unfold, with some preferring an open process instead of coronating Harris.
