Labour action will disrupt several ferry services in Quebec this weekend

The FTQ-affiliated Steelworkers union says they will provide essential services during the strikes.

Service has been disrupted at the Sorel-Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola, L’Isle-aux-Coudres and L’Isle-aux-Grues ferries this weekend, as workers from the FTQ-affiliated Steelworkers union are on strike.

The union said in a press release “this strike is the result of the Société des traversiers du Québec’s (STQ) disappointing returns to the bargaining table.”

Workers at the Sorel ferry have been on strike since 7 a.m. on Friday and are scheduled to return to work at 6:59 a.m. on Monday. Service will be completely interrupted for the duration of the strike.

At the L’Isle-aux-Coudres ferry, the number of crossings will be reduced during the strike, which began at 6 a.m. on Friday and is due to end at 5:59 a.m. on Thursday.

The strike at the L’Isle-aux-Grues ferry began at 6 a.m. on Friday and is due to end at 5:59 a.m. on Sunday.

Despite this, the Steelworkers union has indicated essential services will be provided.

“These essential services include the transportation of passengers and goods in the event of a medical or humanitarian emergency,” the union added.

As the construction vacations get underway, the STQ urged citizens to plan their travel in the context of the ferry employees’ strike. “The STQ is making every effort to move negotiations forward. Numerous negotiation sessions have been held over the past few weeks, and more are planned for the coming weeks.”
