Sentencing hearing set for killer who left her shoes behind after East Village killing

Convicted killer Raven Big Sorrel Horse will face a sentencing hearing in October in connection with the fatal stabbing of a man in Calgary’s East Village.

Student At Law Mackenzie McCaffrey appeared in Calgary Court of King’s Bench on Friday on behalf of defence counsel Alain Hepner to schedule Oct. 22, for Crown and defence submissions in the case.

Big Sorrel Horse, 23, who remains in custody, pleaded guilty in early June to a reduced charge of manslaughter in connection with the attack on Calgarian David Kendall Williams on Oct. 25, 2022. She had been charged with second-degree murder.

At that time Crown prosecutor Kay De Boer, reading from a statement of agreed facts, detailed the events that led to Williams’ death as well as Big Sorrel Horse’s arrest two days later.

De Boer told Justice Robert Hall that the fatal encounter occurred around 1:10 a.m. in the East Village area of downtown Calgary.

“Big Sorrel Horse stabbed David Kendall Williams with a knife, one time in the chest, outside the Real Canadian Superstore,” she said.

“The knife penetrated Williams’ chest wall … and (went) into the right atrium of the heart.”

Not only did an eyewitness, Alexander Moyah, recognize Big Sorrel Horse as one of the two individuals involved in the deadly altercation, but the killer also left a calling card at the scene.

De Boer told the Court of King’s Bench judge that after stabbing Williams she removed the victim’s shoes and exchanged them for her own.

“Before fleeing from the scene Moyah saw Big Sorrel Horse put on the victim’s shoes,” the prosecutor said.

“Big Sorrel Horse left (her) own shoes … at the scene.”

Two days later, while under covert police surveillance, she was seen going into a Real Canadian Superstore near the Southland LRT station where she stole a pair of JOE Fresh sneakers.

Nearby CCTV footage captured her discarding several items including a pair of runners matching those taken from the deceased.
