Sam Smith has teased a little surprise ahead of their BBC Proms appearance as they promised not to wear a thong.

Sam, 32, joined Nick Grimshaw and Annie Macmanus on BBC Sounds’ Sidetracked this week ahead of their only UK appearance of 2024 at BBC Proms.

In the interview, Sam spoke about plans to perform their debut album, In The Lonely Hour which rocketed to number one upon its release during the concert.

They also teased there would be a ‘surprise’ in the second half.

‘In the first half [of the show] I’m going to celebrate [ten years of] In the Lonely Hour… and then the second half is a little surprise. I’m so excited.’

‘I love the proms, it’s great. And everyone needs to relax, I’m not going to get my clothes off!’ they joked.

The singer has previously made headlines for performing in thongs and fishnets but confirmed that this won’t be their attire when it comes to performing at the the prestigious upcoming gig.

Nick asked the singer more about the ‘hysteria’ around the announcement that Sam would be performing at the Proms.

‘Oh yeah, we need to talk about that. There was like tabloid hysteria (in a funny voice) “Oh, Sam Smith’s going to wear a dress at the proms, he’s going to ruin it”,’ Nick said.

Sam joked: ‘Because can you imagine if I turned up in a thong at the proms?’

Annie then added that Sam should wear ‘bondage gear’ to the gig, which Nick agreed would be great. Sam then crushed these suggestions and said that they wouldn’t be rocking something quite so daring.

‘Absolutely not. There’s a time and a place,’ Sam said.

Sam then added that it should be a fantastic night: ‘Yeah, it’s going to be beautiful. All my family are coming down.

‘And it’s an opportunity for me to just remind people of my love of music, especially British music – and where I’ve come from. I want to show people a little bit of where I come from musically,’ they said.

Sam caused quite a stir last year with devilish performances of the single, Unholy ft Kim Petras, which had major critical success as it topped the charts and landed a historic Grammy.

The performance at the Grammys was accused of being ‘satanic’ as the singer wore devil horns and a latex outfit.

While this performance certainly caused a stir, fans can expect something much more ‘appropriate’ when Sam steps on stage at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

‘I think what you’ll see is a performance that is entirely appropriate for the Proms and entirely appropriate for the audience in attendance,’ Radio 3 director Sam Jackson said.

‘This is very much a Prom – it’s not Sam Smith at the Royal Albert Hall,’ the statement concluded. ‘The look and feel will be entirely appropriate for that festival.’
