New gates go up in time for the 1953 Saskatoon Exhibition

On this day in 1953, The Saskatoon Exhibition grounds got a makeover in the form of new $20,000 entrance gates.

From the StarPhoenix archives:

A quick tour of the grounds this morning showed that the plant was in better shape than ever, looking cleaner and more spruced up. The new gates add badly-needed tone to the park and the entire layout looks good.

Add to this that the quality and quantity of exhibits are going to set a record, that advance grandstand sales are far ahead of last year, and that times in this district are good and you have all the ingredients for a banner Exhibition. …

In the brilliant sunlight this morning the grounds certainly promised lively action next week. The race horse special should arrive sometime Sunday afternoon, followed around 10 o’clock by the two midway trains.

Now if only more flags and decorations were in place in downtown Saskatoon where a lot of business is done, the city might give some appearance of Exhibition Week.

Throwback Thursday is a weekly StarPhoenix series where we revisit photos from Saskatoon’s past.
