Phil Mickelson had a new look for Wednesday’s practice round at Royal Troon Golf Club ahead of this week’s British Open.
The 2013 Open Championship winner sported joggers, though it wasn’t exactly his decision.
Mickelson, 54, lost a bet to popular YouTube golfer Grant Horvat, who boasts more than 700,000 subscribers to his channel, in a match published to both of their channels on the popular video platform this week.
The stipulation of the match was that if Horvat won, then Mickelson would have had to wear joggers at this week’s British Open.
But if the six-time major champion came out on top, Horvat would have had to buy a year’s worth of For Wellness coffee for a fan.
As one could tell, Mickelson did not win and he took the loss in stride on Wednesday in a post on social media.
He also posted a photo of himself sporting the dark-colored joggers and added a funny quip.
“As an unfashionable 54 year old, I never thought I could pull off wearing joggers. Guess I was wrong/ Thank you @GrantHorvatGolf we both won,” Mickelson wrote on X.
The post was a bit of a callback to a moment in the YouTube video where Mickelson seemed to doubt that he could pull off the look.
“Wow,” he said. “I’m not sure I could pull that off. Were joggers meant for 54-year-olds?”
What’s unclear is if Wednesday’s practice round in the athleisure wear satisfies the bet or if Mickelson will be sporting them when the tournament begins on Thursday.
As part of the match made for YouTube, Horvat started up five shots, which is something he does when he plays against pros on his channel.
Horvat previously posted videos facing off against the likes of Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm.
The video was filmed at Mickelson’s home course in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
Mickelson will look to win his seventh major, joggers and all.
