Netflix fans are begging others to tune into ‘the best show of the year’an animated series about cats based on a card game.

The nine-part series Exploding Kittens was released on the streaming service last week.

Based on the card game of the same name, it features the voices of Tom Ellis (Lucifer), Sasheer Zamata, Suzy Nakamura, Mark Proksch, Ally Maki and Kenny Yates.

The synopsis of the show reads: ‘Earth sucks, so God (Tom Ellis) gets fired and sent to Earth to reconnect with humanity. The catch? He’s trapped in the body of a chubby house cat.’

Viewers are flocking to the light-hearted watch, however are also somewhat confused by its strange premise.

‘Is this fever causing me to have vivid hallucinations or did Netflix do an animated comedy based on the Exploding Kittens game of all things,’ one person posted on X.

However, many others said they were sold on the show.

‘Exploding Kittens on Netflix is amazing. This is definitely not the canned margaritas talking,’ Julia added.

Many others said the show was an easy and ‘light-hearted’ watch.

However, some were already worried the streaming service could cancel it.

‘So nice for Netflix to actually put effort and advertising into animation….I SWEAR TO CAT GOD IF THIS GETS CANCELLED AFTER 1 SEASON I WILL CRY,’ one person shared on social media.

For those unfamiliar with the history of Exploding Kittens, the game began as a Kickstarter project in 2015 seeking US$10,000 in crowdfunding.

Exceeding its goal in eight minutes, after seven days, it passed 103,000 backers, setting the record for the most backers in Kickstarter history.

At completion about a month later it had US$8,782,571 in pledges by 219,382 backers.

Although the series has largely been panned by critics, it holds a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
