Fantasia film festival workers unanimously approve first contract

The deal, which was reached after a one-day strike last week, includes recognition of employee status, minimum salaries and sick leave.

On Friday, the union and employer reached a deal in principle.

“We are proud of the commitment and determination of our members in the negotiation process. The employer took the act of our mobilization and showed open-mindedness regarding our last negotiation proposal,” the union, affiliated with CSN, said in a statement.

“We had to stand up until the very end to succeed in obtaining significant gains to curb our precariousness. With this first collective agreement, we are setting the milestones to improve our working conditions,” said Justine Smith, who is part of the negotiating committee.

Among the gains are “the recognition of employee status and associated benefits, minimum salary thresholds for each employment category, as well as salary increases for 2024 varying between three and 22 per cent.”

Employees also got nine paid holidays, annual vacation of up to five weeks after seven years of continuous service and the addition of two to 10 sick days.

The 28th edition of Fantasia will begin on Thursday.
