At least Alex Sarr played well on defense.
The Wizards’ first-round pick — second overall — in this year’s draft was held without a point in 30 minutes on the court during Tuesday’s 82-80 summer league loss to the Trail Blazers.
The shocking offensive effort included Sarr going 0-for-15 from the field and missing all seven shots from 3-point range while also failing to knock down either of his two free-throw attempts.
During the third quarter, Sarr attempted to go for a layup down the middle of the lane and had the ball swatted away by UConn product Donovan Clingan, who was taken seventh overall by Portland.
To add to the misery, Sarr turned the ball over three times.
The Frenchman did grab nine rebounds — four of which occurred on the defensive end — and also added three blocks.
The performance continued a trend during the summer league for Sarr, whose offensive efficiency has become an issue through his first three games.
Sarr had 12 points on 4 of 12 shooting when the Wizards defeated the Hawks on Friday and then only had just eight points against the Rockets on Sunday.
“It’s an up-and-down game,” Sarr told the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Monday about the NBA pace of play. “I think I’m adjusting pretty nicely.”
Before the NBA draft, it was reported by Yahoo that Sarr’s camp preferred he go to the Wizards and not Atlanta, which had the No. 1 overall pick.
Sarr did not work out for the Hawks or visit the team ahead of the June draft.
He denied ever saying he didn’t want to go to the Hawks when he sat down with ESPN just before the first round.
“I never said that I did not want to be there,” he said. “I have a great team of agents around me. Atlanta saw me play this year. I was playing in Atlanta when I was [Overtime Elite], so I don’t think it is all about one workout.”
