A man died on remand at the Prince Albert Correctional Centre in the days after his arrest by Prince Albert police.
RCMP have taken over the investigation into the suspicious death of a man who was being held in city police custody in Prince Albert.
The 49-year-old died July 9 in a Saskatoon hospital, having been transported there for care after going into “medical distress” while remanded in custody at the Prince Albert Correctional Centre, according to a media release issued Tuesday by the Prince Albert Police Service.
Prince Albert police opened an internal investigation after they were informed of the death on July 10 by the Saskatchewan Coroners Service. An autopsy on July 12 led the coroner to deem the man’s death suspicious.
The media release laid out a brief timeline, starting with the man’s July 3 arrest by Prince Albert city police officers. He then reportedly appeared July 4 in Prince Albert provincial court before being remanded to the correctional centre.
The man went into medical distress on July 5 and was first taken to Prince Albert’s Victoria Hospital, then sent to Saskatoon.
Prince Albert police requested the RCMP take over the to “ensure impartiality,” the release stated.
RCMP and the coroner’s service continue to investigate.
