Readers’ letters: Help the addicted, but away from downtown Montreal

And Mayor Valérie Plante is no stranger to chaos, writes another reader.

The opportunity should be taken to help these poor souls while avoiding the outcry from Montreal’s communities.

Chaos and Plante go hand in hand

Plante is a peekaboo mayor: You see her for smiling photo ops, but when true leadership is required, you don’t.

Cyclist licences could restore order

Re: “Time to put a stop to cyclists’ chaos” (Letters, July 13)

All cyclists should be licensed and registered with the city, and pay taxes for doing so. If necessary, they should be fined and subject to demerit points, like people who drive cars.

Sometimes it looks like a free-for-all out there, and it needs to be addressed. Cyclist licences should have been put into force years ago. Maybe it would weed out those who are being reckless. We would be able to track offenders down by their licence plates, just as we do for cars.

Susan Roberts, N.D.G.

Set a legal age for cyclists

An age should be set for bicyclists to be able to use city streets. Once an age is determined, every cyclist should have to pass a test and obtain a permit. Maybe this would help them respect the rules of the road.
