Quebec’s forest fires contained or under control, agency says

Since the start of the forest fire season, SOPFEU has reported 238 fires in the intensive protection zone.

On Tuesday morning, there were eight forest fires reported in the zone. One of them — in the municipal regional county of Manicouagan — was listed as being contained while the rest were listed as being under control.

A fire is deemed to be contained when its spread has been temporarily halted. It is considered under control when its spread has been stopped by a suppression line.

The situation has allowed a ban issued last week on open-air fires in or near forests in Nord-du-Québec, Côte-Nord, Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean, Mauricie and Abitibi-Témiscamingue to be lifted on Monday evening.

Since the start of the forest fire season, SOPFEU has reported 238 fires in the intensive protection zone, which is less than the 10-year average of 332. Meanwhile, there are 125 fires burning in the province’s north.
