Thomas Tuchel is keen to take over England if Gareth Southgate decides to step down following more Three Lions heartbreak at Euro 2024.

Southgate will speak to the FA, his family and friends this week before deciding whether or not to remain in charge of the England men’s national team.

His current contract expires in December but the FA are keen for Southgate to sign an extension and take the team to the 2026 World Cup.

England have reached back-to-back European Championship finals and gone deep in two World Cups under Southgate but spending a decade in the job feels a big ask.

Southgate was coy about his future in the aftermath of England’s heartbreaking Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain, insisting it was ‘not the right time’ to make any decisions.

While England reached the final, they failed to hit top gear in Germany, winning just one of their group games before almost being knocked out by Slovakia and Switzerland.

Despite England’s stuttering form, the FA hope Southgate continues in the job but several names are already being suggested as the 53-year-old’s potential replacement.

Eddie Howe and Graham Potter are figures of interest within the FA, while Tuchel has also been tentatively linked with the job.

The German, who left Bayern Munich at the end of last season, is keen to speak to the FA, according to The Sun, having indicated he was open to replacing Southgate following the 2022 World Cup.

Tuchel has won trophies in England, France and Germany, famously lifting the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021. Manchester United considered hiring the 50-year-old earlier this summer before deciding to stick with Erik ten Hag.

Another ex-Old Trafford target, Mauricio Pochettino, has also been linked with the England job, as well as former England U21 boss Lee Carsley.

High-profile names Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Frank Lampard have all been named as possible targets should Southgate decide to step down.

Asked about his future after England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, Southgate said: ‘I don’t think now is a good time to make a decision like that. I need to talk to the right people. It’s not for now.’

Discussing Southgate, ex-Three Lions striker Alan Shearer added to the BBC: ‘I suspect it will be Gareth’s last game.

‘From where he took over and where they are now. There will be great disappointment at home.

‘Yes, we could have played more attacking football but they have got to the final. But when you are here, you have got to get over the line.

‘The reality is he got us to a final three years ago and got us to a final here, and hasn’t won. That will hurt him and maybe he will think it’s time for someone else.’
