Six World Golf Hall-of-Famers to headline Rogers Charity Classic field

The 2024 Rogers Charity Classic will feature a half-dozen members of the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Tournament organizers revealed Monday that Retief Goosen, Padraig Harrington, Colin Montgomerie, Jose Maria Olazabal and Vijay Singh will be teeing it up next month at the annual senior showdown at Canyon Meadows G&CC. They join Ernie Els, whose commitment was previously announced.

Between them, these gents have combined for 14 major triumphs and more than 200 professional victories worldwide.

“This incredible lineup has delivered countless memorable moments in our game throughout their illustrious careers, and I know are determined to put on another great show in Canada,” said Sean Van Kesteren, the executive director of the Rogers Charity Classic. “Having the opportunity to see them continue their careers on the PGA Tour Champions rekindles special moments for all of our spectators. But equally as important, they create new memories for young golf fans who take our event in each year.”

The latest edition of what is now named the Rogers Charity Classic runs from Aug. 16-18.

Els, who was celebrating again Sunday at the Kaulig Companies Championship for his third win in his past five starts on the PGA Tour Champions, is Calgary-bound for the first time, but the rest of these inductees already know their way around the 7,061-yard layout at Canyon Meadows.

Besides their World Golf of Fame credentials, there’s something else they have in common — these legends are proud to show their support for a tournament that has racked up more than $100 million for youth-based charities.

As Olazabal, a two-time Masters champion, put it in Monday’s announcement: “As a player, hearing this charitable focus is very powerful, and that makes this an event you want to align yourself with.”

“I enjoy all of the PGA Tour Champions events, but this one is a special one,” echoed Montgomerie, who will be competing in Calgary for the seventh time. “The course is absolutely perfect, and the tournament has given not only me tremendous support but is simply fantastic the way it treats all of the players. It has been voted the No. 1 tour event three times for a reason and as long as I’m on this tour, I’ll be participating in the Rogers Charity Classic.”
