Local sports briefs: More local talent headed to Olympics and Paralympics

Following their results at the Bell Track and Field Olympics Trials, Saskatoon’s Michelle Harrison and Borden’s Savannah Sutherland are headed to the Summer Olympics in Paris, starting July 26.

Harrison will compete in the 100-metre hurdles, while Sutherland will race in the 400-m hurdles and women’s 4×400-m relay.

They’ll be joined on the athletics team by pole vaulter Anicka Newell, who has familial ties to Saskatoon, and coach Chris Belof, who hails from Regina.

Also recently announced for Team Canada was was women’s rugby 7s player and HSBC SVNS rookie of the year Carissa Norsten of Waldheim, Regina women’s water polo player Blaire McDowell and Saskatoon-born men’s basketball forward Trey Lyles.

Meanwhile, wheelchair fencer Ryan Rousell of Asquith will compete in his second Paralympics when the event begins August 28.

Berries split series against 57s

The Saskatoon Berries were on the road over the weekend, taking on the Swift Current 57s in two games and the Weyburn Beavers in one.

On Sunday, home-runs by Ethan Menard and Grant Sommers helped propel the Berries to an 8-3 victory over the Beavers, marking the team’s second win in a row after they also defeated Swift Current 15-7 on Saturday.

In that game, Wyatt Wiatrek was awarded the win for the Berries, recording eight strikeouts and only allowing three hits in five innings pitched.

It wasn’t all success on the weekend, however, as the 57s were able to secure a 10-9 comeback victory in Friday’s game, scoring seven runs in the final bottom of the ninth after Saskatoon had led 9-3.

Carter Beck had a home run for the Berries in the loss.

Saskatoon is 19-20 on the season and sits fourth place in the league’s East Division.

Women’s and men’s provincial golf champions named

The Saskatchewan amateur golf championships are once again in the books with four individuals claiming the titles at the Royal Regina Golf Club.

In the mid-amateur championship, Saskatoon’s Carla Odnokon claimed the women’s title with a 25-over 244, while Prince Albert’s Danny Klughart picked up a score of 1-under 212 to win the men’s side for his fourth Saskatchewan title.

Both amateur championships were won by Alberta individuals with Calgary’s Sela Ogada scoring 13-over 232 to win the women’s side and Edmonton’s Kye FIsher scoring 11-under 273 in the four-round men’s event.

Softball provincials underway

Softball season is beginning to wrap up in Saskatchewan with provincial championships occurring almost every weekend in July.

Last weekend, the Saskatoon Lasers defeated the Prince Albert Aces 10-5 to claim gold in the U11 North A girls division, while the Prince Albert Astros defeated the Treaty 4 team 10-3 to win the U17 open boys division.

Saskatchewan fourth at Football Canada Cup

Competing in the bronze-medal final of the Football Canada Cup on Saturday in Regina, Team Saskatchewan suffered a 35-0 loss to Alberta to settle for fourth place in the national event .

Alberta led 21-0 at the halfway point and added another pair of touchdowns —one on the ground and one in the air— in the second half, while keeping Saskatchewan out of the end-zone.

In the semifinals, Saskatchewan fell 32-7 to Ontario, who went on to defeat Quebec 45-7 in the gold medal game.

Saskatchewan opened the tournament with a 36-7 victory over Manitoba.

Varga to compete with Canadian volleyball team

Muenster’s Skyler Varga will compete with the Canadian men’s volleyball team when they travel to the Men’s Senior Pan American Cup July 14-21in the Dominican Republic.

Canada won the tournament last year for the first time in Pan American Cup history and this year’s event will serve as a qualifier for the 2025 NORCECA Continental Championship.
