Saskatoon zoo opens new pier with emphasis on accessibility

Charitable donations have helped make a new feature at the Saskatoon zoo accessible to all.

Visitors to the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo will be able to get a better look at the underwater world of Prairie wetlands with the opening of a new pier and lookout area.

The zoo officially opened the new pier on Thursday. A media release said the new exhibit offers an opportunity for students and families to “examine the movement, respiration and adaptations of underwater life.”

The pier is located toward the rear of the zoo compound, near the pronghorn habitat.

The Saskatoon Zoo Society will offer an interpretive pond-dipping program every day until Sept. 2. The zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition to having a larger area better suited to accommodating school tours, the new pier’s wider dock has been built to offer better viewing opportunities for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility.

The pond-dipping program also includes net extenders to allow for an easier reach into the water.

“We are very excited about this new enhancement to our facility and the educational opportunities it will provide for students and families visiting the Zoo,” zoo manager Jeff Mitchell said in the release.

Greg Yuel is the founder of PIC Investment Group Inc., which grew from his earlier venture, Prairie Industrial Chemicals Ltd.

Yuel was also a founding member of the Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority (SREDA) and has served on the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce.

June saw the zoo pare down its herd of zebras; two of them were sent to live at a zoo in New Brunswick. The Saskatoon zoo had originally been housing five zebras after they were seized from a private property in Saskatchewan; three zebras remain in the Saskatoon zoo’s care.
