Jose Trevino placed on 10-day IL after costly slide in Yankees injury blow

BALTIMORE – Jose Trevino’s insurance run in the ninth inning Friday night came at a cost.

The Yankees placed Trevino on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a left quad strain he suffered sliding into home in the ninth inning of a 4-1 win over the Orioles at Camden Yards.

Carlos Narvaez was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take the open roster spot, though the Yankees will likely lean on Austin Wells behind the plate for however long Trevino is out.

Ben Rice, a natural catcher, is also on the roster, but he has been starting regularly at first base as Anthony Rizzo’s injury replacement and has only caught one inning since being called up last month.

Trevino’s injury came on a night when he ripped a pair of doubles after having only two doubles across 58 games entering Friday.

Narvaez, 25, is known as a strong pitch framer while his right-handed bat had some impact at Triple-A, hitting .269 with a .834 OPS, nine home runs and 78 strikeouts in 70 games this season.
