The latest classic film to be given a new lease of life is reportedly 00s comedy-drama The Devil Wears Prada.

Disney is working on a sequel of the hit movie 18 years later – and Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep have been convinced to reprise their roles as Miranda Priestly and Emily Charlton respectively.

However, a follow-up film has divided fans, with some warning movie bosses to ‘not touch a classic’, while others struggled to contain their excitement.

The Devil Wears Prada’s original screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna is also on board; however, Anne Hathaway, who played Miranda’s assistant Andy Sachs, is not thought to be involved in the project, according to Puck.

The publication reports the sequel could follow magazine editor Miranda struggling with the ongoing decline of traditional media sparring with Emily, who is now an executive at a luxury fashion group.

Miranda desperately needs Emily’s company to pay for advertising in her magazine to ensure its survival.

Disney declined to comment when approached by Puck. has also reached out to the studio for comment.

On Instagram, the response to the sequel was mixed.

@kissmy_cass was among those who had reservations, saying: ‘The original is so great! It’s a classic!!! Do we really need to do another?’

Echoing their sentiment, @lukesanchez1999 commented: ‘Nothing is sacred.’

@emilyh99954 added: ‘I doubt Meryl will do it. And if Meryl isn’t doing it neither will Anne Hathaway or Emily Blunt.. which means there’s just no reason to actually do it. I would leave it alone. If you want to desperately make a sequel to an Anne Hathaway movie from the early 2000’s – the princess diaries would be more appropriate and far more enjoyable to watch if you can convince Julie Andrews to return as well.’

However, @malinemoye said they couldn’t wait to watch the sequel, writing: ‘Why is no one ready …… yess I’m so excited.’

@Shanahdeirdre enthused: ‘👏👏👏 can’t wait! Make her even meaner😍😂.’

@rsquisenberry added: ‘Omg!!!!!!!!!! I hope the sequel outshines the first.’

The Devil Wears Prada director David Frankel previously spoke to about a sequel – and claimed it would never happen.

In 2022, he said: ‘There was a little bit of talk a couple of times – once after the movie was such a big hit 15 years ago.

‘We all got on a conference call to discuss it and it was easily decided that that was a terrible idea.

‘We had told this story, these characters were very complete in the way that they had appeared in this film and we had no imagination for where the story would go.’

Anne also previously rubbished the idea of a sequel during an interview on The View in 2022.

She said: ‘I don’t know if there can be. I just think that movie was in a different era.

‘Now, everything has gone so digital and that movie centered around the concept of producing a physical thing. It’s just very different now.’

Meanwhile, Meryl has only addressed a potential sequel once in 2012 telling Access Hollywood she would be down for a second film.

She said: ‘Sure, I mean, I’d have to lose the [bloody] weight, but I would do that, yeah.’

In February, Emily claimed there had ‘never’ been much discussion around a sequel.

She told the Happy Sad Confused podcast: ‘Sometimes things should be cherished and preserved in this bubble and it’s OK.

‘And I think — didn’t Meryl say something funny about it? They asked her about it, “Would she ever do a sequel?” and she went, “Yeah, if I don’t have to lose the weight.” But I think she said “the [bloody] weight.”‘

The rumoured sequel comes as The Devil Wears Prada is being given a musical theatre adaptation – with Desperate Housewives icon Vanessa Williams starring as Miranda.

The stage show, based on the original film, will feature an original score by Sir Elton John and direction and choreography from Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell, who has previously worked on the likes of Kinky Boots, Hairspray, and Legally Blonde.

Heading to Plymouth’s Theatre Royal in July and London’s Dominion Theatre in October, the show follows ‘fresh out of college aspiring journalist Andy, who scores a job at the prestigious Runway magazine working for fashion’s most powerful and terrifying icon — editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly,’ according to its synopsis.

The 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada follows new graduate Andy who lands a job as an assistant to Miranda Priestly, the demanding editor-in-chief of a high fashion magazine.

However, when Andy begins to get more responsibilities, Priestly’s long-term assistant Emily gets jealous.

The film is based on the 2003 novel of the same name written by Lauren Weisberger, who worked as an editor and writer at Vogue and Departures magazine.

The role of Miranda is famously said to have been based on Vogue’s Anna Wintour.
