Former Edmonton track coach’s sex abuse trial to resume late 2024

Testimony is complete in the case of Thomas Kenneth Porter, who began a trial late last month on allegations he molested five boys during his stint as a sprinting coach with the Edmonton Olympic Club in the 1970s and 80s.

Court of King’s Bench Justice Nicholas Devlin is expected to hear closing arguments from Crown and defence lawyers this fall.

The case is next in court Aug. 30 to set dates for those hearings.

Porter, 75, was charged in 2020 with five counts of gross indecency and five counts of indecent assault on a male — Criminal Code offences when he allegedly abused the five athletes during his coaching tenure in Edmonton.

His career began in Edmonton, where, according to the four complainants who testified, he fostered unusually close relations with athletes. They described frequent, intense massages which sometimes involved sexual touching, as well as dinners that included alcohol.

Porter denies the allegations and has pleaded not guilty.
