Alberta RCMP catch 101 drunk drivers during Canada Day long weekend

RCMP officers removed 101 drunk drivers from Alberta roads over the Canada Day long weekend.

From June 28 to July 1, Mounties said they pulled over 101 drivers for impaired driving.

Over the same weekend, RCMP said there were seven traffic fatalities.

These are individuals who would have been back home on Tuesday. They are our family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbours. It’s devastating,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull.

Of the 101 impaired drivers, 79 were served immediate roadside sanction fails while 22 were served immediate roadside sanction warnings, police said.

Drunk drivers weren’t the only issue on Alberta roads over the long weekend.

While our officers work to uphold traffic safety, Albertans also have a role to play in helping ensure everyone makes it home safely,” Turnbull said.

In a news release, Mounties said they conducted enforcement initiatives along Highway 1 near Banff and Lake Louise, where speeding was also an issue. In all, tickets in Banff and Lake Louise resulted in $42,551 in fines, and RCMP said several drivers will be facing mandatory court charges.

Between July 1 and 2, more than 170 tickets were issued for speeding — 11 of which were for speeding 50 km/h over the posted limit.
