Celebrities across the UK have been sharing their responses to the General Election results but Richard Osman’s mum might have the sweetest reaction yet.
Labour Leader Keir Starmer has stepped into 10 Downing Street as the Prime Minister after Rishi Sunak offered an apology-filled exit on the podium.
While Labour are celebrating their 412 seats in the House of Commons, other parties have made huge strides — including the Liberal Democrats.
For Richard’s mum, Brenda, this election was a particularly moving one as she was ‘finally’ represented by an MP she wanted.
‘At last, I’m being represented by someone I voted for. It’s only taken 82 years,’ she wrote in a message shared by Richard, 53.
Signing off with ‘sent from my iPad’, the House of Games star added in the caption: ‘Amongst the hot takes this morning, I’m very happy for my Mum, born and raised in the heart of Sussex.’
Mid Sussex was previously the hold of Mims Davies, the former Minister for Health, but ran and won the seat in newly defined East Grinstead and Uckfield.
Instead, Alison Bennett is the new Lib Dem MP for Mid Sussex, beating Labour candidate Dave Rowntree (who also happens to be Blur’s drummer).
‘Is she in the constituency where Dave Rowntree didn’t win? Is this the old Blur/Suede rivalry rearing its ugly head?’ joked fan Kate.
In a bizarre music crossover, Richard’s brother Mat is also a Britpop legend as the bassist in chart-dominating Suede.
We’re not sure how the 56-year-old guitarist would have responded to his mum voting for his chart competition but it seems Brenda is more than happy with her new Lib Dem MP.
Plenty of celebs have been sharing their responses to the election news, including Carol Vorderman, Nigella Lawson, and Russell T Davies cheering the landslide victory.
The former Countdown star was a huge proponent of tactical voting and praised its use in defeating high-profile Conservatives including former Prime Minister Liz Truss.
She wrote on X: “BREAKING Liz Truss lost her seat due to Tactical voting and YOU. She lost by 630 votes BUT A massive c 4,500 postcodes in South West Norfolk constituency were typed into our website StopTheTories.Vote during this GE campaign.
‘7 times more than her vote loss. I can tell you around 1.75 MILLION POSTCODES have been typed into StopTheTories.Vote during the general election campaign.’
She promised more analysis to come and her appearance on Channel 4’s election show was praised by viewers for being ‘savage’ and ‘magnificent’.
TV chef Nigella tweeted a cartwheel emoji, a lettuce emoji and another cartwheel emoji, poking fun at the former PM.
Truss is largely associated with lettuce after a newspaper live-streamed footage of the vegetable to see if it would last longer than her tenure in No 10 — it did.
Doctor Who showrunner Russell appeared particularly pleased by the ousting of Tory MP Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, who was defeated by Labour’s Dan Norris in the new North East Somerset and Hanham constituency.
He shared the viral photo of Sir Jacob lounging on the front bench of the House Of Commons and wrote: ‘At last,’ adding a celebration emoji and tagging the location as ‘New World’.
The post sparked comments from famous friends like David Furnish, the husband of Sir Elton John, who wrote ‘Bye Felicia,’ on the post.
Former footballer Gary Neville tweeted the same photo of Rees-Mogg with the caption ‘Morning’ and a red rose emoji, the symbol of Labour.
He also celebrated Truss’ booting and wrote: ‘Liz Truss no longer an MP. Fully deserved for the devastating wrecking ball impact on this country!’
Meanwhile, Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway shared a video of herself at a north London count calling down to the Labour leader to congratulate him after he was re-elected as MP for Holborn and St Pancras.
She wrote: ‘Me “Congratulations Prime Minister!” @gmb is the first at 2.40am to welcome Sir Keir into his new role. Check out his smile and wave, and the cheer.’
