Raptors sign 2024 draft picks Walter, Mogbo, Shead plus Utah centre

The team signed incoming rookies Ja’Kobe Walter, Jonathan Mogbo, Jamal Shead and Branden Carlson on Thursday, setting them all up to compete at the annual desert showcase.

The team signed incoming rookies Ja’Kobe Walter, Jonathan Mogbo, Jamal Shead and Branden Carlson on Thursday, setting them all up to compete at the annual desert showcase.

Mogbo was selected 31st overall, kicking off the second day of the draft. The 6-foot-7 big man starred for San Francisco.

Shead was the 45th pick by the Sacramento Kings and arrived in a multi-player trade.

Mogbo and Shead signed three year contracts under the NBA’s new second-round exception, according to the Athletic. Further reports had the third years of the deals as team options

Walter averaged a team-high 14.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.1 steals and 32.3 minutes in 35 games in his only season with the Bears after being a five-star recruit.

Mogbo came into his own after previously playing at two junior colleges and another NCAA school. Shead was the NCAA’s defensive player of the year and the  BIG 12’s player of the year and left Houston as the school’s winningest player.

Carlsen, a 7-foot centre with three-point range, signed a two-way contract and could see time with Raptors 905 of the NBA G League. He played five years at Utah. Starting Raptors centre Jakob Poeltl also played collegiately at Utah.
