Ecclesiastical visitors stop in Saskatoon in 1957, headed to Prince Albert

On this day in 1957, the first Eucharistic Congress in western Canada brought dignitaries from across Canada to Saskatoon en route to P.A.

From the StarPhoenix archives:

A wish that Catholics in the Prince Albert diocese, regardless of racial origin, might be made “one heart and one soul” by breaking bread together often at the eucharistic table was expressed (in Prince Albert) Sunday afternoon.

The wish was a parting thought from James Charles Cardinal McGuigan, archbishop of Toronto, at the end of a two-day visit to the Eucharistic Congress, held to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Parish of the Sacred Heart and the 50th anniversary of the Prince Albert diocese. …

Program for the congress — first of its kind ever held in Western Canada — was an almost continuous series of pontifical masses, holy hours, pageants and processions. Taking part were high church dignitaries from all parts of Canada and the United States, members of various religious orders and lay members of the church of English, French, German, Austrian, Belgian and Indian extraction. …

A further highlight came later Sunday morning when Rev. Henri Renaud of Zenon Park was ordained to the priesthood. This ceremony was conducted by Bishop Blais, who was joined in celebration of the mass by the new priest.

Throwback Thursday is a weekly StarPhoenix series where we revisit photos from Saskatoon’s past.
