Toyota drops four-banger in Supra, inline-six now standard

If you’re sad to see the four-cylinder go away, take solace in the fact the manual transmission remains available

  • Toyota is axing the 2.0L four-cylinder for the 2025 model year, execs have confirmed
  • The good news? The 3.0L can still be had with a stickshift
  • That said, we sincerely hope this is not the beginning of a model sunset

Anyone who moaned and cried into their axle grease about the availability of a four-cylinder Toyota Supra will be pleased to know it seems the automaker is dropping that engine option in the upcoming model year, leaving the 3.0L inline-six as the sole available mill. The rest of us can weep at the knowledge that a ticket to Supra-town probably just got a lot more expensive.

Dropping the four-cylinder variant likely makes sense from the perspective of a bed-wetting accountant, since there’s every chance in the world its take rate is less than that of the inline-six, thanks in no small part to the latter being offered with a manual transmission. No matter its powertrain, the Supra is definitely a niche product – albeit one we are glad exists – with fewer than 1,500 examples finding new homes in the first half of this year south of the border, where the market is ten times the size of Canada.

In case you need a refresher, the four-cylinder Supra had a 2.0L turbocharged mill under the hood, dancing with an eight-speed automatic transmission featuring paddle shifters and launch control. It is a hoot to drive and keep on the boil, delivering 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of twist. Now, it seems the 3.0L turbocharged inline-six, putting out 382 ponies and 369 lb-ft torques, will be the base engine. This is a tremendous engine, but one which (understandably) commands a price premium.
