Fans react as B.C.’s Michael J. Fox plays guitar with Coldplay at Glastonbury Festival

Sitting in a wheelchair, the Burnaby-raised actor was able to play guitar and kick out his legs while performing Fix Me with Chris Martin

Coldplay fans at the 2024 Glastonbury Festival in England got a rare treat on Saturday night when Burnaby’s Michael J. Fox joined the band onstage.

Footage from the event shows Fox — in a wheelchair but still able to play guitar and kick out his legs — performing the superband’s hit Fix Me alongside singer Chris Martin.

You can watch it here:

Fox, 63, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 but has carried on with his acting and writing career, while raising millions of dollars for research into the gradually-debilitating disease.

Fox rose to fame on the TV series Family Ties and went on to star in the Back to the Future series.

Earlier this year, a film about Fox’s life and career won four Emmy Awards, including for outstanding documentary.

The film — Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie — was released on Apple TV and also landed awards for best director for a documentary program, picture editing and music composition.

On Saturday night, Martin introduced Fox as a “legend.”

“The main reason why we’re in a band is because of watching Back to the Future, so thank you to our hero forever and one of the most amazing people on earth, Mr. Michael J. Fox. Thank you so much, Michael,” Martin told the energetic and emotional crowd of 100,000.

Fox is an accomplished guitarist who started playing in bands at age 14 while attending Burnaby Central Secondary School.
