Sports Briefs: Berries split doubleheader with Red Sox

With the split, Saskatoon’s record is now 12-5 and the team sits fourth in the East Division.

The Saskatoon Berries hosted the Regina Red Sox for a doubleheader of Western Canadian Baseball League action on Monday afternoon with both teams earning a win.

Regina came out swinging in the first game, picking up four runs in the first inning.

Saskatoon cut the lead to 4-1 after the second inning and then added another three runs in the fifth inning, including a home run from Bailyn Sorenson, to tie the game at four.

That tie didn’t last long as the Red Sox scored another two runs in the sixth inning, increasing their lead to 6-4, where it would remain for the remainder of the game.

After a short break, action resumed between the two teams with the second game of the doubleheader.

Neither team was able to get a runner home until the fourth inning when Berries players Nolan Sparks, Jaden Lamothe and Sorenson each earned a run, giving the hometown team a 3-0 lead.

Regina finally got on the board in the seventh inning, earning a single run, but they were held short of the comeback as Saskatoon took the victory 3-1.

With the split, Saskatoon’s record is now 12-5 and the team sits fourth in the East Division.

Rattlers lose fifth straight

After starting this year’s Canadian Elite Basketball League on a winning streak, the Saskatchewan Rattlers lost their fifth-straight game on Monday night, falling 88-81 to the host Edmonton Stingers.

The two teams kept it close through the majority of the game, but, when the target score was set in the fourth quarter, the Stingers held a 79-74 lead.

Saskatchewan managed to close the gap, getting the score to 83-81, but Edmonton then picked up five-straight points, capping it off with a single free-throw to win the game.

Edmonton’s Elijah Miller led both teams with 30 points, with a record 10 three-pointers, while Emmanuel Bandoumel picked up 27 points as the top scorer for the Rattlers.

With the loss, Saskatchewan sees its record drop to 5-7, fifth in the league’s Western Conference.

Tan, Proctor and Norgaard win Central Am titles

Following three days of action from June 29 to July 1 at the Saskatoon Golf and Country Club, Silvester Tan, Warren Proctor and Tommy Norgaard claimed titles at the Saskatchewan Central Am Championship.

In the championship division, Tan shot a 74 in the first two rounds, but then shot a 64 in the third round to complete the tournament four-under 212. He was five shots a head of the second-place finisher.

Proctor also finished five shots ahead of the runner-up, opening the senior men’s division with a 73 in the first round, then adding a 74 and a 70 in the second and third rounds, respectively, for a total of one-over 217.

Meanwhile, in the men’s regular division, Norgaard finished with a 14-over 230 after shooting rounds of 78, 75 and 77.
