Genesis X Gran Racer VGT is a wild 1,500-hp track car

One caveat, here: you’ll be seeing this dressed version of its Berlinetta Concept on PlayStations, not in parking lots

  • Genesis continues its tradition of making outrageous concept cars—but this one’s particularly race-y
  • The Genesis X Gran Racer VGT is set to appear in the Gran Turismo series of sim racing games
  • Sure, it’s just a concept, but it is said to produce over 1,500 horsepower

It will also be the fourth Genesis developed for the Gran Turismo digital racing game series, a platform which arguably cemented legends like the Nissan GT-R and its ilk in the minds of young gearheads long before those cars ever officially reached our shores — and now look at ‘em. In other words, we feel there are worse ways for a fledgling brand to introduce itself to legions of speed freaks.

Popping in the new Magma Orange, its very long dash-to-axle ratio positions its driver and powertrain toward the rear in a mid-engine layout, while a stretched wheelbase and relatively short front overhang create fantasy-like proportions. The brand’s signature two-line lamp design is in full effect, while a larger front splitter, rear diffuser, and strategically placed canards amp the visuals compared to the X Gran Berlinetta. That’s a real carbon-fibre rear wing, if you’re wondering.

Unlike some concept cars which show up on display stands with painted windows and a cardboard engine, this thing actually does have a finished interior and powertrain with assigned specs. It’s a hybrid unit combining a V6 engine and electric guts to deliver 1,540 hp and 1,051 lb-ft of torque. The gas pot is good for 870 horses; while the front e-motor generates an additional 670 all-electric ponies. This is a leap from the X Gran Berlinetta Concept, which had a listed 1,071 hp and 986 lb-ft of twist.
